Essential Materials

Before diving into the setup process, make sure you have the following:

  • A backgammon board
  • 30 checkers in two different colors (15 of each color)
  • 2 six-sided dice (although having 4 is preferable, and for social games, a doubling cube is optional)

Anatomy of a Backgammon Board

The distinctive feature of a backgammon board is its 24 elongated triangles, known as points. At the beginning of each game, the checkers are arranged along these points in a specific manner, moving along them during gameplay. These points are grouped into four quadrants, each consisting of six points. The bar runs through the center of the board, dividing the quadrants into pairs. Notably, the bar itself is not considered a point.

When hit, checkers are taken off the board and placed on the bar. Re-entering the game is contingent on the roll of the dice. The bar also separates the home boards and outer boards, with the home board on either the right or left, depending on the player's position. The home board is always on the near side, and players move their checkers toward it. The outer boards are on the opposite side and are used by both players.

Notation

Backgammon employs a notation system to record games. Each point is identified using a 24-point numbering system from the player's perspective. The number 1 point is the farthest point on a player's home board from the bar, while the number 24 point is the farthest point on the opponent's board from the bar.

Board Setup

For an accurate board setup, ensure that both sides mirror each other. Place the black checkers as follows:

  • Two black checkers on the number 24 point in the far-right corner.
  • Five black checkers on the number 13 point in the far-left corner.
  • Three black checkers on the number 8 point on the near side of the board.
  • Five black checkers on the number 6 point on the near side of the board.

Mirror these positions for the white checkers.
